at the Copenhagen Opera House restaurant ALMANAK

We are thrilled to announce the return of our Jazz Masterworks Series at our pop-up jazz club June 25-July 10 at one of Copenhagen's most prestigious and iconic venues, featuring international jazz of the highest order and an exclusive dining experience at the Copenhagen Opera House restaurant Almanak, with its spectacular fifth floor panoramic city and harbourfront view of Copenhagen (w/ outdoor terrace on wind-still days). Two shows nightly at 17:00 (5 PM) and 20:00 (8 PM).

Niels Lan Doky International Jazz Collective - Bud Powell "In Copenhagen" - Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2022

JUNE 25-27 - Experience our reinterpretation of the great album BUD POWELL IN COPENHAGEN from 1962, live performed by Thomas Clausen, Tobias Dall and Victor Jones. We also proudly welcome Jørgen Leth as our guest of honor (his film director debut in ‘63 was a film on Bud Powell). Powell was one of key musicians who innovated the bebop movement, alongside fellow icons such as Charlie Parker & Dizzy Gillespie. In ‘62, Powell began playing in CPH with bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen among others.

Niels Lan Doky International Jazz Collective - Amanda Thomsen - Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2022

JULY 2 - One of the greatest success stories from our years at The Standard Jazz Club in Havnegade was the emergence of the rare and incredibly talented young Danish vocalist Amanda Thomsen who debuted there in early 2014 at the age of only 16. Tonight's concert will feature a selection of highlights from her numerous concerts at The Standard Jazz Club during the mid-2010s.

Pre-concert Jazz Dinner

JULY 3 - Enjoy a great dinner at Almanak, before the concert with the fabulous Diana Krall in the main hall of the Copenhagen Opera House, with jazz accompaniment featuring pianist Ken Linh Doky. ‘Almanak i Operaen’ is the result of Nordic cuisine’s thoughts on gastronomy prepared from local ingredients in season and with a special focus on the planet’s future.

Niels Lan Doky International Jazz Collective - Herbie Hancock "Empyrean Isles" - Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2022

JULY 4-6 - "Empyrean Isles" has been called the "record that officially established Herbie Hancock as a major artist in his own right." It is one of the most studied and analyzed piano albums by subsequent generations of jazz pianists. It also contains the first recorded version of "Cantaloupe Island", one of his most famous tunes. This live rendition features 7x Grammy award winning trumpeter Randy Brecker, alongside Thomas Clausen, Tobias Dall, & Victor Jones.

JULY 7-9 - Don't miss this final engagement culminating our pop-up jazz club. Join Thaddeus Sledge and Mai Lan Doky as they deliver their compelling, sophisticated and highly engaging tribute to The Genius and The Queen - Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin - with timeless songs such as "Doctor Feelgood", "Respect", "Chain Of Fools", “Let The Good Times Roll”, and more.

THE NLD IJC
JAZZ MASTERWORKS SERIES

In 2014, Niels Lan Doky began using the term “Jazz Masterworks Series” to present live performances and modern interpretations of iconic albums that have defined the genre at the now defunct The Standard Jazz Club in Copenhagen. “Unlike Classical music, jazz is mostly improvised and as a result we don’t have written scores of masterworks that can be read and played by other artists.  But I have concluded that album recordings are the jazz world equivalent, hence the Jazz Masterworks Series concept was born.” Stellar casts of American, European and South American musicians from the Niels Lan Doky International Jazz Collective will perform and re-interpret a selection of masterworks albums from Jazz’s iconic canon during this years Copenhagen Jazz Festival as well as paying tribute to some of the greatest jazz artists from our time.

ALMANAK TASTES OF DENMARK
ALL YEAR ROUND

Restaurant Almanak i Operaen is a Danish tribute to the French bistro. The seasons form our culinary compass, and they are inspired by the local vegetables, seafood, which are in season right now. When this year's first rhubarb stalks, winter's abundance of root vegetables or the irresistible lumpfish roe arrives completely fresh in the kitchen, it just itches in chefs to transform them into tasty dishes. The restaurant is named after the old Danish word for annual calendar, because Almanak is the taste of Denmark all year round. Almanak i Operaen is the result of Nordic cuisine’s thoughts on gastronomy prepared from local ingredients in season and with a special focus on the planet’s future. These are thoughts they carry forward, and today they are working even more purposefully, working through our ‘Manifesto for Sustainability and Gastronomy’.
